The island of Thassos is located in the northern Aegean. Thassos covers an area of ​​393 square kilometers and a circumference of about 100km. It has a rich vegetation of pine trees, firs, oaks, cedars, laurels, skina, bonito, koukoudies. The island’s population is about 18,000 people. The inhabitants engage in the cultivation of olive trees and vineyards, farming, fishing, beekeeping, tourism and the mining of marble.

Most of the inhabitants live in the villages of Limenas, Theologos and Potamia during the winter and in the summer they move to the “Skala”of the village to welcome travellers and tourists from many countries. Panagia, Rahoni, Kallirachi, Maries, Kazabiti, Alikes, Thimonia, Ai Giorgis, Prinos and Koinyra are equally beautiful villages, which one should visit. Each has its own beauty.

LIMENAS

Limenas is the island’s capital with beautiful beaches (Glyfada, Makryammos, Nysteri, Papalimani) and rich archaeological findings (Dionysus’ Altar, Poseidon’s Altar, ancient agora), which attract many visitors. The Ancient Theatre of Thassos is impressive. In Limenas, the Archaeological Museum hosts rich excavation material.

During your walk along the old port, visit Kalogeriko, a magnificent edifice erected by the monks of Vatopedi Monastery from Mount Athos.

A wide array of taverns serving excellent food, the intense and varied nightlife and the magnificent hotels will turn your vacation into an unforgettable experience.

PANAGIA

The village owes its name to the Church of Panagia (the Holy Mother). It is one of the most renowned traditional villages on the island. Huge plane trees and abundant running waters lend the island unique beauty.

The beaches of “Chryssi Ammoudia” and “Avlakia” lie very close to the village. Do not miss to sample the exquisite stewed fruit in sirup (glyka koutaliou), a confectionery based on traditional recipes and prepared by the women of the villages.

POTAMIA

Another beautiful village smothered with vegetation. Visit the art museum that lies in the village and be acquainted with the works of the local sculptor Polygnotos Vagis.

The beach at Skala Potamias (skala = mooring place) is magnificent with crystal-clear waters. After your swim, visit the taverns of the village to sample local delicacies. Sun dried octopus and octopus balls are strongly recommended.

In Potamia, there is also Tarsanas (ship building premises), a masonry building dating back to the past century, erected by monks from Mount Athos.

ALYKES

On the eastern side of the island there is the peninsula of Aliki. On both sides of the isthmus formed two natural coves with crystal clear waters. In Salt Lake , which the inhabitants call ” pool of the island “, it is worth observing the bottom where it differs a sunken quarry carved stones from the Roman Empire.

The name comes from Alice (sea), while in others from Alki (physical strength, vigor). Alykes is known for its natural collection and drying of sea water and converting salt. You will find many hotels, tavernas and beautiful beaches to spend the day and enjoy the beauty of the area .

ASTRIS

On the SE side of the island, 7km from Potos, is the small rural settlement of Astris. Some insist that here is the place described by Homer as the land of the Sirens.  Astris is well known for its good climate in the whole island. Its beautiful name was picked by the inhabitants themselves.

Homonymous beach village of Astris is located in a bay with calm waters and ideal for swimming and fishing. Astris is traditional, but that does not mean you will not find accommodations and taverns to eat.

KINIRA

Koinyra is one of the most exotic locations on the island, due to its morphology, its magnificent view to the sea and its green pine forest. The sea is considered blessed because it is full of fish, which feed the seafood tavernas. Opposite Koinyra, you will notice a small islet Koinyriotiko, which is not easily accessible.

Shortly after the village of Kinira will find the most famous beach of the island, Paradise, a name worth given.

THEOLOGOS

Theologos is the biggest village of Thassos, which has also been the first capital of the island. Houses built according to the old architectural style emerge from the narrow alleys during your walk. Chatzigiorgis’ Manor currently operates as a folklore art museum. In Theologos, there is a revival of an old custom, the representation of the Thassian wedding taking place in the month of August.

MARIES

KALLIRACHI

A fishing village that preserves its simplicity and local colour as years go by. The secluded beaches of Ano and Kato Lagada are inviting for the visitor. The small port looks equally beautiful both in the summer with the fishing boats and other vessels that moor there and in the winter, when it is beaten by the wind.

The village is just two kilometres away from Skala Kallirachis. Make a brief stop for a coffee at its square. After your wandering in its narrow alleys, visit the Church of Agios Dimitrios (St.Demetrius), marvel its hundred-year-old iconostasis. Moreover, do not miss the visit to the folklore art museum.

SOTIRAS

Just 3 km from Skala Prinou arrive in Skala Sotira, beach and mountain village of Sotira. Mythology says that this was the temple of Hercules. The village is famous for the bread it makes. The Sotiras is built at an altitude of 380 meters, at the foot of Mount Ipsarion.

The village is famous for its mild and dry climate in the past attracted for its healing properties due to the high altitude, the dense forest and the cool water of its fountains. You can visit the old church of the Transfiguration. In the central square of the village, under the ancient trees, there is the marble fountain source of Platanias, which is a listed as a monument. Sotiras is a traditional village without any modernism and for this reason it will amaze you.

KAZAVITI

Kazaviti undoubtedly is one the most beautiful and perhaps the most picturesque village of Thassos. The traditional architecture has remained indelible. Built on one of the slopes of Ipsario at an altitude of 350 meters, it is divided into two main settlements, the Big and Small Kazaviti, spaced by 500 meters.

Kazaviti is amazing to hike and tour but also to eat. One can enjoy the stone houses with wooden balconies, the stone-made road trails, the traditional doors, the colorful windows windows and course end up at the main square of the village where one can chill out beneath the huge Pine tree and enjoy a coffee or a meal in the local cafes and taverns.

Prinos is the second port of Thassos, which connects Kavala to Thassos directly. It has developed touristically and commercially because of its harbor and can hosts many tourists who want to be near the sea and transport.

RACHONI

Rahoni and St. George are two quiet and picturesque villages, suitable for those seeking nature and tranquility.  Rahoni, has many properties of the Athonite monastic state (called Vakoufia ) has mansions, taverns and cafes . There is also the Church of the Assumption, built in the 19th century. The annual festival of the temple, the famous Qurbani or Kloumpani, is hosted ​​on August 15, when local residents cook and offer veal stew. The village is famous for the production of oil,  honey, flower honey and sweet walnut.

On the beach you will find the Skala Rachoni, with its traditional harbor and shops of all kinds. On the left of Skala Rachoni there arenice and quiet beaches, where visitors can enjoy the sea.
